CITIZENS OF THE REEF CENSUS

WHEN: March 1 - 31 2025
WHERE: Nation-wide

The Great Reef Census is a unique approach to scalable reef conservation that invites everyday people to play a direct role. Launched five years ago in response to severe bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef, it has become one of the world’s largest marine citizen science initiatives, gathering vital data to help identify coral reefs that are top priority for conservation and protection. By harnessing people-power, cutting-edge AI and marine science delivers highly accurate and rapid data to marine scientists and reef communities.

This year, the fifth Great Reef Census will launch at the Ocean Lovers Festival in March 2025. This milestone is particularly important as it marks the first survey of the Reef since the devastating mass bleaching events declared in early 2024. The Census will provide critical insights into the health and resilience of the Reef, helping shape the path forward for restoration and protection.

Over its first four years, the Census has dramatically expanded survey coverage of the Great Barrier Reef, delivering essential data to support scientific models, identifying key source reefs critical to resilience, and uniting volunteers from over 70 countries. Using cutting-edge AI and the passion of thousands of global participants, the Census fills critical data gaps, offering timely information that’s essential for protecting one of the world’s most iconic ecosystems.
